ZUM

In the raw space of a downtown Seattle warehouse, Olympian Peter Shmock found an evocative atmosphere for his “fitness Mecca,” Züm. Intended as a place for mindful exercise, the renovation was conceived as an insertion of sleek, sensuous materials and minimalist detailing within the heavy timber and brick shell. The fundamental challenge was to incorporate the needs of a full-service health club into a retreat that did not compromise the original character of the warehouse. Raw steel, translucent glass, and gentle lighting alongside the original brick walls and timber trusses contribute to the ethereal, industrial effect. The project was led by Rocky Rochon Studio in collaboration with BjarkoSerra Architects.
